Selenicereus

Selenicereus (spinulosus?)

Selenicereus, the "Queen of the Night", comes from southern Texas, Mexico, Central America, Argentina and the West Indies. Several species are in cultivation, including S. grandiflorus. The plant pictured was acquired with that name on the label, but this appears to have been erroneous, it has been suggested it may actually be S. spinulosus.

These plants have long, narrow, fast growing stems which are not very exciting, but their flowers are something else. Night opening, most close after just a single night (the one pictured is an exception to this rule), but at up to 12" (300mm) in diameter and accompanied by a strong fragrance they make a wonderful sight.
